Push, Pull, Paint (3)

WORKSHOP DATE: August 15 - September 5, 2020

WHEN: Saturdays, 10am - 12pm

WHERE: Virtual meetings on Zoom, by Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill

SESSIONS: 5 sessions

PRICE: $225

TEACHERS: Laura Shabott with Alana Barrett

Master painter/teacher Hans Hofmann had schools in New York (1932-56) and in Provincetown (1935-58), influencing two generations of American artists. Hofmann’s influence continues with this course where you will learn the principles of plasticity (the paint IS the thing), composition and vibrational color. The work will get done in each person’s environment and then shared with the group. This five-week online course can include other media if paint is involved in the process. Our goal is to understand what good painting is and to create ways to be truly present in our own art.

Each ZOOM session begins with an audio/visual presentation of art that is derived from this tradition of push/pull. Then, we will look at each other’s work from the previous week and learn how to critique authentically. Last, there will then be a demonstration of a weekly challenge to be completed. The subject matter can be figurative, still life or landscape/seascape, or a series of abstractions or text. You will be asked to use the same conceptual approach for the duration of the course.

We will immerse ourselves in compositional structure, color relationships, qualities of line and the power of shapes. Artists will learn how and why to incorporate push/pull into their own work and gain confidence in how to approach the blank page or canvas.
