Experimental Surfaces and Materials in Painting
Painting techniques will give you the opportunity to explore 5 mediums (walnut oil, oil sticks, sumi ink, oil paints, and acrylics) in unique ways in your work and studio practice. We will approach each medium with curiosity and play, with an emphasis on experimentation and process based painting. Each week students will be presented with a lecture on exemplary artists who use these mediums in their work, an energizing demonstration on technique by the instructors, and a weekly assignment/critique.

Color and Sound
Every week the class will hear a new auditory piece written by composer and trombonist Eli Feingold. The auditory piece will be specifically written to accompany a color theory assignment and presentation for that week. For example - if we are working with warm colors for that week, the auditory piece will involve “warm” sounds. The students will then go home and make a painting based off of the auditory piece (they will be encouraged to listen to it as they paint) and we will critique their work in the following class.

Responding and Reacting to the Figure Through Visual Vocabulary
Our emphasis in this course is to make art that develops, or refines, your unique visual language and the confidence that comes with that. This course is for people who want to dive into their practice during these winter months while experiencing a connection with other artists who seek an encouraging and challenging environment.

Figure Drawing for Artists Who Want to Learn Hofmann's Push/Pull Theory
Hofmann’s theory of pushing and pulling a composition on a two- dimensional surface is best understood when drawing from life with charcoal on paper. The course begins with a lecture on Hofmann’s push/ pull theory by viewing work from the collection. We continue with two hours of drawing and then a break for lunch. The workshop reconvenes for critique. Each artist, no matter what their level of experience, will leave with a deeper understanding of the theories that shape modern art. Affirming and insightful feedback will create the ability for you to further explore figure drawing.

Hard Edge Abstraction
Each class will start with a lecture of hard-edge painters, focusing on those already in the traditional art cannon, as well as up and coming artists working in a hard-edge style. Then we will move on to an assignment for that week regarding a hard-edge approach - i.e. focus on geometric shapes, organic shapes, large vs. small, pattern etc. If necessary, a live demo will be provided for the students regarding the assignment. Student work will then be critiqued in the following class.

Painting Through the Eyes of Cezanne
In this course, we will embrace the confident and bold mark making of Paul Cézanne in our oil paintings. Through a series of lectures and demos, we will investigate how Cézanne used exploratory brushstrokes and daring color in his work, and how he served as a bridge between impressionism and cubism. Students will work on two assignments throughout the five weeks: a replication of a Cézanne painting to get familiar with his style, followed by their own unique and contemporary spin on Cézanne’s work.

Creating Volume and Monumentality Through the Figure
Sometimes, we just want to make art that feels larger than life. What are the elements of drawing and painting that create the desired volume and mass? Guided exercises, one built upon the other, will show you how to go from an empty surface to a series of realized voluminous drawings or paintings. Affirming and process-based, you can use this workshop to return, learn and transform.

The Art of the Mark: A Workshop in Abstraction
In this online course, we will discuss how mark-making is a fundamental part of abstract painting. You will study Hans Hofmann’s theory of push/pull, the precursor of Abstract Expressionism in a slide presentation, demonstration, and guided exercises that transform your range of mark-making. In the afternoon, we will move to hard-edge abstraction, with a slide presentation of contemporary artists, a demonstration, and guided exercises to learn this essential abstraction skill.

Push, Pull, Paint (4)
Hofmann’s influence continues with this course where you will learn the principles of plasticity (the paint IS the thing), composition and vibrational color. The work will get done in each person’s environment and then shared with the group. This five-week online course can include other media if paint is involved in the process. Our goal is to understand what good painting is and to create ways to be truly present in our own art.

Integrating Figure Drawing into your Studio and Artwork
In this course we will explore Hans Hofmann’s theory of pushing and pulling a composition on a two-dimensional surface by drawing from life with charcoal on paper, collage, and paint. Mondays begin with critique of the week before. From 10-noon, we will be making work (drawing, painting, collaging) from a long pose. Real-time feedback will happen in an encouraging and supportive environment that is also authentic and challenging. A weekly challenge will be given.

Midweek Critique - Introduction to Color
A one-hour supplemental meeting of the Introduction to Color Class to critique works-in-progress in a PowerPoint presentation. The art is from a weekly challenge. With time permitting, there is also a PowerPoint presentation of an artist, school of art or a technique. Students report that the midweek critique creates continuity and productivity in their artist’s practice and in Introduction to Color.

Introduction to Color
Introduction to color will provide you with the fundamental basics to painting with color. In this course, we will explore foundational concepts using color theory and the color wheel to guide us. By the end of the course you will have a thorough and confident understanding of color relationships and key terminology - like hue, tone, shade, tint, split compliment, tetrad, and much more.

Midweek Critique - Push, Pull, Paint (3)
A one-hour supplemental meeting of the Push, Pull, Paint (III) Class to critique works-in-progress in a PowerPoint presentation. The art is from a weekly challenge. With time permitting, there is also a PowerPoint presentation of an artist, school of art or a technique. Students report that the midweek critique creates continuity and productivity in their artist’s practice and in Push, Pull, Paint III.

Figure Drawing as Expression
Each of the five sessions will begin with looking at works from PAAM’s collection, or at each other’s art, as prompts for the material being presented that day. We start with gesture drawings, then move on to evolving exercises based in the Hofmann tradition of abstracting the figure while working from nature. Artists can create drawings, paintings, mixed media collage or sculpture.
