In this course, we will embrace the confident and bold mark making of Paul Cézanne in our oil paintings. Through a series of lectures and demos, we will investigate how Cézanne used exploratory brushstrokes and daring color in his work, and how he served as a bridge between impressionism and cubism. Students will work on two assignments throughout the five weeks: a replication of a Cézanne painting to get familiar with his style, followed by their own unique and contemporary spin on Cézanne’s work.
